Neurodermatitis treatment with Homeopathy
Dermatitis is the term used to signify inflammatory conditions of the skin like redness, itching, swelling and pain Neurodermatitis is a chronic form of dermatitis also called Lichen Simplex Chronicus signifying a constant scratch-itch cycle resulting in thickening and darkening of the skin with variable scaling and a leathery texture. The more the skin is scratched, rubbed, or even touched, the more it itches. The itch can become so intense that it disrupts sleep and in some patients even causes extreme anxiety.
The cause of the itch can be anything — dry skin, an insect bite, tight clothing or anything in the environment. There may be a family history of asthma, hay fever, eczema, psoriasis or other skin disorders. The most common sites of an outbreak are the back, neck, arms, legs and ankles. Women are more commonly affected by neurodermatitis than men, and the condition is most frequent in adults aged between 20 and 50. Stress can exacerbate the symptoms of neurodermatitis.
The goal of treatment is to end the itch. Since it is people who are nervous, tense and restless that are most affected by neurodermatitis, homeopathy’s holistic approach proves particularly effective. Based upon the sum total of the patient’s medical and emotional history and symptoms, a constitutional medicine is prescribed which stimulates the body’s own healing mechanism to break the scratch-itch cycle without any side effects or the use of greasy external applications.
In a clinical trial conducted in Japan, patients of dermatitis were put on homeopathic medication for an average period of two years. The findings revealed that 88 per cent reported substantial reduction in itching while 77 per cent reported improvement in sleep due to overall improvement in dermatitis. So on an average, 82.5 per cent of the test group reported relief with homeopathic treatment.
Closer home, I remember the case of a 34-year-old businessman, Mr Hamilton who came to us with the complaint of severe itching on his right ankle for the past eight years.
He had tried all sorts of allopathic medications but found only temporary relief. His persistent scratching had led to a thick, dark patch on his ankle. Plus he was frequently embarrassed by the intolerable urge to scratch. He reported that the only way the itching would temporarily subside was by washing the skin with hot water. Typically it is washing with cold water that relieves neurodermatitis itching since the cold water temporarily numbs the nerves. Considering the contradictory symptom in this case as a key symptom, the patient was prescribed homeopathic medicine Rhus venenata. The inhouse dermatologist was consulted for proper skin management. He was advised to use a moisturising soap and an emollient to keep his skin moist. He was counselled for stress and advised certain stress management and behaviour modification techniques. From the second month itself his itching subsided and over a period of one and a half years, his neurodermatitis was completely cured. Homeopathy overcame the itch.
